"Thank you so much, John, for Zooming with my class and sharing your time, talent, and creativity with my students! Your patience and warmth truly shone through, and it was such a joy to watch you engage with my young writers. The way you treated each child as a real author made a lasting impact. You sparked their imaginations and gave them the confidence to share their stories. Your ability to workshop with them so thoughtfully—listening carefully, encouraging their ideas, and guiding them with such care—was truly inspiring. I am so grateful for your visit and look forward to your teaching in the future. You’ve helped plant seeds of creativity that will keep growing long after today."

Update 5/19
Sorry for the radio silence. Between jury duty last week and training for the Bay to Breakers yesterday, I've not had a lot of time. But justice has been served and the distance has been run, so I'm back the desk playing catch up! Remember, whenever you visit, be sure to drop me a line; I'd love to hear from you!

SMART PHONES, WISE CHOICES

The technology is everywhere, but even though phones are built to help us communicate, they often prevent genuine connection. Our upcoming book, Our Phones Left Us Alone, addresses the overuse of smartphones in a lighthearted way and provides useful advice for responsibly introducing this technology into your kids' lives.
Inspired by the beloved children's book, The Day the Crayons Quit, I imagined what would happen in the overworked smartphones finally took a vacation. Then I came across Anxious Generation and realized just how significant this issue is. Since then, I've spoken to groups all over the world who are committed to delayed smartphone access to help kids lead healthier lives.
Our Phones Left Us Alone is currently in development with artist Ben Friesen
and the subject of a Seed & Spark crowdfunding campaign. Please consider

A Global Cause
Our Phones Left Us Alone started as an amusing idea that hit shortly before my flight departed from Spain this summer. Perhaps that's fitting because since I first got the inspiration, I've discovered it's much more than a cute concept, but a global cause. Our relationship with technology is fundamentally similar to our relationship with food, and when it comes to our children, they suffer from poor diets.
As I develop this book, I've been blessed to meet with organizations all over the world, from the UK to Kenya, who are concerned about the impact of social media on kids. And if social media is the virus, smartphones are the vector.
Groups like Wait Mate in Australia, Digital Health Education Network in Kenya, and Smartphone Free Childhood in the UK are just a few of the organizations working to change legislation, awareness, and culture to prevent tech addiction that negatively impacts our social skills, attention span, and capacity for critical thought. Our Phones Left Us Alone is proud to be a part of this movement and help draw attention in some small way to improving our digital diets.
